Incident: Case 12C12193
Type of Incident: Jeeping accident with injuries.
Location: Kanner Flat Trail, off Forest Service Rd 1915. Little Naches Area.
Date/Time: 8/19/20 1640 Hrs
On 8/19/12 at about 1645 Hrs Fire and law Enforcement received a report of an off road jeeping accident in the Little Naches area off of Forest Service Road 1915 in an area called Lily Pond Lake. This area is approximately 9 miles northeast of the junction of SR 410 and the Little Naches Rd. It was reported that the victim was un-conscious and trapped under the vehicle that he was driving.
Law Enforcement and fire personal responded to the scene via dirt forest service roads.
The victim, Allen Desteiguer, 66, from the Vashon Washington area, was extracted from the vehicle by emergency personal and with the assistance of other jeepers who were at the scene.
The victim was transported up a steep hill to an awaiting Life Flight helicopter in a Jeep of an off duty Joint Base Lewis McCord (JBLM) service member who was also jeeping in the area.
The victim was then flown to Yakima Regional Hospital.
Investigation revealed that the victim was jeeping with other members of an off road club. The victim was driving a 1974 Land Rover and attempting to go up a steep portion of the Kanner Flat Trail from Lily Pond Lake. This portion of the trail is approximately 3 foot ball fields long and has an approximate 70% grade.
The victim was approximately half way up the hill when it is believed that the gears in the rear differential of the vehicle broke, causing the Land Rover to roll backwards down the hill. The Land Rover then rolled over and came to a rest on its top. The victim was trapped under the vehicle.
At last report the victim sustained several fractured ribs and lower back fractures. None of the injuries appear to be life threatening.
