SYNOPSIS: On June 20, 2013 at about 0440 hrs the Yakima Sheriff’s Office received a report of an armed individual who had confronted a homeowner in the 100 block of Celia Lane in the Totus Park development in White Swan. Officers from the Yakima Sheriff’s Office and Yakama Nation Tribal Police Department responded to the call. At about 0450 a Yakama Nation Tribal Police Officer spotted the suspect on Chestnut between 1st Street and Signal Peak Road. The suspect was commanded to raise his hands and instead began firing a handgun at the officer. The officer returned fire and the suspect ran off.

Other responding officers established a perimeter. Once the perimeter was established the Yakima PD SWAT team was requested. While searching a yard within the security perimeter, the SWAT team took the suspect into custody. The suspect was located at about 0800.

Eventually, officers from Wapato PD, Toppenish PD, Yakima PD, Yakama Nation PD, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Yakima Sheriff’s Office were involved in the effort to locate and apprehend the suspect. The FBI is conducting the administrative investigation into the officer-involved shooting aspect of this incident. The Yakima Sheriff’s Office is investigating the criminal investigation into all aspects of the incident.

Questions concerning the identification of the Yakama Nation PD officer, and questions concerning policy matters connected to the involvement of that officer in a shooting should be referred to the Yakama Nation Police Department.
