Highland School District No. 203
Director, District 2
- Description of Office
- David Barnes
- Dee Dee Trepanier
Yakima County is divided into 17 separate school districts, each governed by a
five-member board of directors who serve regular four (4) year terms. Their responsibilities focus on four areas: Quality of instruction, district planning, policy development and communications. Directors are local policy makers and serve as a link between the school system and the public.
Board members are elected in a nonpartisan general election by all voters within the school district. They receive no salary. Board members are partners in a management team and share in a variety of management decisions from fiscal accounting, employment of teachers, educational materials, and facilities to transportation services.
School directors are called upon to be leaders in the following areas:
√ assessing and reflecting the educational needs and values of the community;
√ developing an educational philosophy;
√ establishing school district goals;
√ providing for program development activities;
√ reviewing the financial needs of the districts;
√ assuring systematic review and evaluation of all phases of the school program
My name is David Barnes and I’m running for the district 2 position on the Highland School board. My wife and I have lived in the Highland School District since 1996 and have two children enrolled in the Highland School system. I’m running for this position because I believe that we need to support as well as challenge our kids in a way that will help them achieve their full potential while also supporting the faculty in any way that we can.
It's been rewarding to work beside amazing people while serving on Highland's Board. The decisions made have led to strong administrative/staff teams putting students first by providing quality educational programs for them and outstanding facilities that are clean and safe that instill pride. We've provided training and resources to staff and academic opportunities to students, helping them meet state academic requirements. We're looking at Highland's future and prepare to replace the current bond. I look forward to continuing this work and hope that with my experience and exposure to District policies/finances and dedication to Highland tradition you'll vote for me.
