11.29.11 - Updated Strategic Industry Cluster for South Central Region

The South Central Workforce Development Council is appending its Strategic Plan to include a new Industry cluster list for the south central area.  This ranking of industry clusters for the region will serve as a basis for informing policy and investment decisions for workforce development.

01.20.11 - YVCC Recognized For Improving Retention
Yakima Valley Community College has been recognized by Achieving the Dream, a national nonprofit organization, for its success in improving student retention rates. The college increased the percentage of students who stay in school from fall to winter to 81 percent from 75 percent.

09.15.10 - Free Microsoft E-Learning Available at WorkSource Centers
Starting this week, Microsoft's complete e-learning library is offered at area WorkSource career centers. The goal is to help job seekers build their computer skills and become more competitive in the job market. The e-learning courses will first be available at WorkSource offices in Everett, Redmond, Spokane, Thurston County, Vancouver and Walla Walla. It will be expanded to job seekers statewide on Oct. 1.

09.15.10 - New Commissioner Named at Employment Security Department
Paul Trause has been named the new commissioner of the state's Employment Security Department. He was the agency's deputy commissioner under Karen Lee, who held the post for five years. He also served as deputy commissioner at Employment Security under two previous commissioners.

A six-year study claims there is compelling evidence that industry-specific training programs can increase the earnings of a range of disadvantaged populations. Public/Private Ventures, a national policy and research organization, has released "Tuning In to Local Labor Markets".

Employment Security Commissioner Karen Lee announced today that she will leave her post at the end of September to take a new job. Lee, who has been with Gov. Chris Gregoire’s administration since March 2005, has accepted a position as the CEO of Pioneer Human Services in Seattle.
