Yakima County Veterans Demographics

Yakima County is home to approximately 16,808 Veterans. Veterans account for about 7% of the total population.

Many of our newer Veterans are returning from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom and facing challenges that raise concerns. Our resource page seeks to connect our Veterans with the services and agencies to meet our Veterans needs.

National and Washington State statistics raise questions of how we are meeting the needs of our Veterans. To date:

  • the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) estimates that 62,619 veterans are homeless on any given night
  • 64% of our younger Veterans have deployed more than once.
  • 22 Veteran Suicides per day in the US
  • 25% of new Veterans have experienced Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury.
  • The unemployment rate for Veterans has been over 10% compared to 8.9% for non-veterans. Work skills are not always transferrable.
  • About 15% are women.
