WIA Incentive Monies
for training incumbent workers in the Manufacturing Industry. The South Central
WDC has embarked on an incumbent worker training program with manufacturing
companies in our three-county region (Yakima, Kittitas, Klickitat). |

This project came
about as a direct result of the two earlier projects which identified skill
upgrade needs in the Woods, Metals, and Plastics industries. |

The WDC Board
endorsed the concept of using local monies to upgrade skills with the current
workforce, and subsequently, appealed to the Washington State ESD to experiment
by using WIA Incentive Monies for incumbent worker training in
industries determined central to South Central economic development. |

A partnership between
the Yakima County Development Association (EDC) and the South Central Workforce
Development Council (WDC) has elicited interest in the manufacturing community
to train owners, managers, supervisors, and production employees in Lean
Manufacturing concepts to assist companies in techniques to assess their
efficiency, output, minimize waste, maximize customer value, reduce waste,
etc., with an eye for continuous improvement. |

This recent project
has included 20 companies from the 3 counties, training approximately 50
incumbent workers as well as one business outreach liaison from each WorkSource
Center and affiliate site throughout the South Central region. |

Once the initial
Lean 101 need has been satisfied, next steps include follow-up
discussion/exploration with participating companies to determine our service
direction with the industry. |
