DELAURO
AMENDMENT TO BUDGET COMMITTEE FAILS
The House
Budget Committee completed its mark up of its version of the FY 07
Budget Resolution late last night. It moved out of Committee on a
party line vote. The amendment offered by Rosa DeLauro (D- CT) to
increase funding levels in the House Budget Resolution to the levels
passed in the Senate by the Specter/Harkin amendment, failed on a
party line vote, 22-14. This was not unexpected, as nearly every
substantive amendment also failed along party
lines.
Congressman
Mike Castle (R-DE) is coordinating an effort of moderate Republicans
to offer an amendment at the Senate Specter/Harkin levels when the
Budget Resolution comes to the House floor next week. NWA (USA
WORKS!) met with a respected Democratic House Member today, asking
him to offer to cosponsor the amendment with Congressman Castle in a
bipartisan effort to get this amendment passed. This will be a
difficult task, as House Republican leadership has already met with
its Members encouraging strong party discipline on the Budget
Resolution to restrain against additional
spending.
