response to ongoing concern about nitrate levels in groundwater, Yakima
County recently launched the Nitrate Treatment Pilot Program, a
treatment program aimed at households with people at high public health
risk from nitrate contamination.
a January mailing to 8000 Lower Valley households served by private
wells, homeowners and residents were invited to test their drinking
water and return their results to the County. Those households served
by private wells that exceed the EPA drinking water standard for
nitrate (10 mg per liter) were encouraged to apply for a free or
reduced cost Nitrate Treatment System.
pilot program, made possible by State funding secured by
Senator Jim Honeyford, joins Yakima County, the Yakima Health
District, the State Department of Ecology, the State Department Of
Health, the U.S. EPA and Culligan International to provide education,
technical assistance and financial assistance to households at high
public risk from nitrates.
