In response to ongoing concern about nitrate levels in groundwater, Yakima County recently launched the Nitrate Treatment Pilot Program, a treatment program aimed at households with people at high public health risk from nitrate contamination.

In a January mailing to 8000 Lower Valley households served by private wells, homeowners and residents were invited to test their drinking water and return their results to the County. Those households served by private wells that exceed the EPA drinking water standard for nitrate (10 mg per liter) were encouraged to apply for a free or reduced cost Nitrate Treatment System.

The pilot program, made possible by State funding secured by Senator Jim Honeyford, joins Yakima County, the Yakima Health District, the State Department of Ecology, the State Department Of Health, the U.S. EPA and Culligan International to provide education, technical assistance and financial assistance to households at high public risk from nitrates.

The treatment program is the first step in a larger effort to address groundwater contamination in the Lower Valley.

THE PLANNING DIVISION 2010 REPORT

Planning 1

Low Number of 2010 Planning Division Cases Reflects Local Economy

2010 was a very similar year to 2009 in regards to Yakima County Planning Division cases.  Short Subdivision Exemption cases continued to decrease in number, registering the lowest total from the past 11 years.  Subdivision cases were few, registering the second lowest year in the past decade.  Early Assistance meetings increased. If it weren't for 2010 being a year for rezones and Comprehensive Plan text amendments, along with the related early assistance meetings, text and SEPA cases, 2010 would have competed directly with 2009 for the worst year of the decade.  Here's hoping that 2011 realizes an improvement in the local economy.
