Date and Time: 10/8/2011
Location: Lateral B Rd near Kays Rd, Wapato
On Saturday, 10/8/2011, at about 4:00 p.m., a 13 year-old male was struck by a motor vehicle on Lateral B Rd near Kays Rd. The juvenile was picking up aluminum cans alongside the road with his sister and a friend when the car hit him. The southbound car continued on after striking the victim. The suspect vehicle did not stop.
The victim was attended to by Fire District 5 firefighters, and then transported by ambulance to a hospital in Yakima. His condition was unknown late Saturday, but he was conscious and alert prior to transport.
There is little information on the suspect vehicle or the driver. At the time of the accident, it was daylight and the roadway was straight and level. The area is experiencing higher than normal vehicle traffic due to apple harvest. The Yakima Co Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, and anyone with information is urged to call the agency at 509-574-2500.
The incident is a graphic reminder that pedestrians utilizing the roadway for any reason must use extreme care. Visible clothing is recommended and pedestrians should always walk against traffic as far off the traveled roadway as possible.
Information will be released as it becomes available.
