On 08-11-2011 at about 1230 hours a dump truck and trailer owned by Columbia Asphalt was traveling east on Evans Rd from the area of Shields Rd. The driver of the dump truck was coming from a previous job site and didn’t realize his hydraulic dump bed was still raised and so as he traveled east, the dump truck snapped about ten utility lines that extended across the roadway on Evans Rd.
When the dump truck attempted to cross the intersection with Harrah Rd, the dump bed caught a much more concentrated section of utility lines proceeding north and south. The weight and force of the dump truck against the utility lines snapped four utility poles near this intersection completely down and across the roadway.
The intersection has been closed for several hours while the efforts of multiple utility companies including Yakama Power, Pacific Power and Light and Centurylink work to cut power to the area and then remove the many downed lines and poles so that repairs can begin.
Yakima County road crews have put up barricades to block traffic from entering the area, in all four directions.
The driver of the dump truck is 64 year old Jerry Berriman of Yakima, who was cited for negligent operation of the dump truck. There was no evidence of impairment. No one was injured and it doesn’t appear the dump truck sustained any damage
