Press Release- Update

Incident (Update):     Missing Person
Incident Location:    Camp Fife area (Chinook Pass)
Incident number:      11-14553
Incident Date:            09/17/2011, approximately 1700 hrs

The Yakima County Sheriff’s Office is currently searching for a missing 23 y/o male in the Camp Fife area of Chinook Pass.

The 23 y/o male, from western Washington had been camping at ‘Camp Fife’ with a large group of other individuals.  The male is developmentally disabled with Down Syndrome.  He is reported to have essentially non-verbal communication skills.  He has been missing since approximately 5pm yesterday.

The male had come to the Camp Fife area with a support group that he had belonged to for several years.  This is an area where the group has camped during trips to this area in previous years.  Earlier in the day the group had toured Boulder Cave, and had then returned to Camp Fife for the night.  One of the group members went to the young man’s cabin to get him for dinner at approximately 5pm, and found him to be missing.  It is believed that he simply wandered away from the camp on his own.

Group members immediately initiated a search using their own members.   When the man was not located in a short time, YSO was notified.

Yakima County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue personnel quickly responded to the area and mounted a ground search.  Approximately 20 SAR members searched throughout the night using ORV’s, K-9, and foot search personnel, and utilizing FLIR technology.  The new YSO Mobile Command Post was taken to the scene, and a search command post was initiated.

To this time, the search has been unsuccessful.  Additional resources have been requested through the Washington State Emergency Operation Center (EOC).  At this time, additional search units are en-route from King County, Pierce County, Klickitat County, and Kittitas County.

The search will continue through the night, and will expand as additional resources arrive.

The male was last seen wearing long pants, long-sleeved shirt, and a stocking cap.  He is not believed to have taken food or additional outerwear or coat with him.  The weather last night was wet with temperatures dipping, and is expected to be much the same tonight.

The name of the male is being withheld at the request of family.  The family has been notified, and are at the search location.

This will continue to be an on-going search, and additional resources will be utilized as needed.

The contact person will be: Sgt. George Town, YCSO SAR Coordinator.
