YAKIMA SHERIFF’S OFFICE PRESS RELEASE
At approx. 1053 am on 2/7/12 Deputies had received a report of a residential burglary in the 3000 block of Cheyne Rd (Zillah area)which had been interrupted by the homeowner. The homeowner was able to able to give a description of the suspects clothing, vehicle, and their direction in which they had driven away. The victim also advised the suspects had stolen a handgun from the residence.
Responding deputies began to search the area for the suspect vehicle. During the search the suspects were spotted from a distance in an area north of the Zillah area commonly used for riding ATVs and other off road vehicles where they had gotten stuck. When the suspects saw the deputy they fled their vehicle on foot. Officers from Zillah PD, YSO, Granger PD, the Violent Crimes Task Force, and Wapato PD responded to the area to assist with the search.
Officers were able to locate the suspects in a canal approx. three fourths of a mile from where they had abandoned their vehicle. The suspects were taken into custody without incident and the handgun was recovered with them.
It was later learned that the suspect vehicle was a fresh stolen vehicle from another jurisdiction where a report had not been taken yet.
Property recovered from the suspect vehicle was later learned to have been taken from the burglary in which deputies were currently investigating as well as another which had not been reported yet. The second burglary had occurred in the 2500 block of Houghton Rd. Property from both burglaries was returned to their respective owners.
Both suspects were 15 year old males who reside in Sunnyside.
No names will be released at this time.
Both suspects were booked into the Yakima County Juvenile Center on 1st degree burglary charges. More charges are expected to follow.
