Toppenish School District No. 202
Director, District 3
- Description of Office
- Richard Lommers
- Aurora Vela Sandoval
Yakima County is divided into 17 separate school districts, each governed by a
five-member board of directors who serve regular four (4) year terms. Their responsibilities focus on four areas: Quality of instruction, district planning, policy development and communications. Directors are local policy makers and serve as a link between the school system and the public.
Board members are elected in a nonpartisan general election by all voters within the school district. They receive no salary. Board members are partners in a management team and share in a variety of management decisions from fiscal accounting, employment of teachers, educational materials, and facilities to transportation services.
School directors are called upon to be leaders in the following areas:
√ assessing and reflecting the educational needs and values of the community;
√ developing an educational philosophy;
√ establishing school district goals;
√ providing for program development activities;
√ reviewing the financial needs of the districts;
√ assuring systematic review and evaluation of all phases of the school program
The Toppenish School District has made significant progress in multiple areas from preschool to high school. Our preschool is highly recognized and filled to capacity and through the Board’s leadership will be expanding. Our award winning STEM program is growing in the Toppenish High School, Eagle High School and is being integrated into the middle school with plans for an elementary program. Our Cats Academy and online schools are growing and improving. I would like your vote so that I can continue to help move the Toppenish School District forward.
I have announced my candidacy for the Toppenish School District Board.
My knowledge and experience in education and many years in this district qualify me to provide responsive leadership on the School Board. I will insure that student achievement remains our highest priority by working collaboratively with parents, teachers and staff. I will work to make sure that our children receive the academic skills and training necessary to prepare them for today’s completive job market and to enter college.
I was raised educated and lived in Toppenish all my life. My three youngest children currently attend school in the Toppenish.
