Master Gardener's Demonstration Garden, 1000 Ahtanum Road, Union Gap (left toward the red barn).
In the spring of 2005, a group of Yakima County Master Gardeners began a demonstration garden to teach local gardeners. It is located at the Ahtanum Youth Park, which has historical significance in our valley. It was once a Farm Labor Camp where people lived in small cabins and worked the agriculture fields. The Yakima Valley has rich soil and is famous for it's commercial production of many crops, including apples, pears, cherries, hops, and alfalfa just to name a few. The demonstration garden will have four distinctly different areas when completed. In just one growing season, we have begun the Victorian Garden, the Children's Garden and are breaking ground in the spring of 2006 with the Raised Beds/Xeric Garden. Also this spring we will be creating our entrance and central area. We have all the irrigation installed and have built a garden shed.We meet weekly at the site to plant, work on pathways, create sitting areas, install birdhouses, paint, and, of course, to weed. Be sure to check back to see the progress.

...But that is the joy of a garden; it blooms for all who have eyes to appreciate it, and all may claim it because it gives its beauty so freely to every garden lover.
