WaterSense

Factoid

The amount of water leaking from plumbing fixtures in U.S. homes could exceed more than 1 trillion gallons a year!  That's a real waste of water and energy resources to pump, treat and heat it!  If one in ten fixed this problem it would save lots of water and would save energy equivalent to taking 55,000 cars off the road.

Smart Watering

A third of the water Americans consume daily is used to irrigate lawns, water gardens, and maintain landscaping.  More alarming, up to fifty percent of that water goes to waste due to over-watering, runoff, and evaporation.

Groundwater Contamination (Nitrate and Coliform) in the Lower Yakima Valley

Exempt Wells

On September 21, 2009, the state Attorney General's Office issued a formal opinion regarding the interpretation of statutes exempting certain withdrawals of groundwater from permitting requirements, and authorizing the Department of Ecology to withdraw waters from appropriation.

Yakima Valley residents invited to discuss well water health concerns

OLYMPIA   Lower Yakima Valley residents whose drinking water comes from private wells are invited to two community meetings on March 14 in Wapato and Grandview. Experts from the State Department of Health will share information and chat with residents about health concerns they may have about their water.

The first meeting will be from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Benton Rural Electric Association, 410 S. G St., Toppenish; the second meeting will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Carl L. Stevens Senior Center, 207 W. Second St., Grandview.

The community gatherings follow a meeting of federal and state agencies and area residents last December organized by the federal Environmental Protection Agency. The agencies are working together to develop short-term and long-term strategies to manage pollution in shallow groundwater sources in the Yakima Valley.

“We encourage Valley residents who have concerns about their well water to attend one of these meetings,” said Wayne Clifford, director of the Department of Health Office of Environmental Health Assessments. “They’ll be able to talk one-on-one with our staff and get the information they need to make smart choices about protecting their health.”

Informational materials will be available. Some of the materials are available in Spanish, and Spanish-speaking staff will be on-hand to help interpret.

Residents who have questions about the meeting can call toll free, 1-877-485-7316, ext. 3243.
