Many household are experiencing a harder time accessing food due to changes in federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) guidelines, delays caused by the government shutdown, and seasonal economic challenges. If you or someone you care about needs food today, these tools can help you find no-cost meal programs, mobile markets and food pantries throughout Yakima County.

What is Basic Food (SNAP)

Basic Food, also called SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), helps people buy groceries each month. If you qualify, you will get an EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer) card that works like a debit card at stores, farmers markets, and some online stores that accept EBT.

How to Apply for Basic Food

You can apply in three easy ways:

  1. Apply Online - Apply through Washingtonconnection.org/home/ to see if you qualify and submit your application.
  2. Apply by Phone - Call Washington Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) 877-501-2233.
  3. Apply in Person - Visit your local DSHS Community Service Office (CSO). Find a CSO near you at https://www.dshs.wa.gov/office-locations

How to Check your Benefits or EBT Balance

You can check your balance or benefit status anytime:

  • On your phone: Call EBT Customer Service:1-888-328-9271
  • Online account: Visit www.ebtedge.com or use the EBT Edge mobile App.
  • On your receipt: Your EBT balance is printed at the bottom after every purchase.

The Salvation Army supports local families year-round by providing food, housing assistance, and other basic needs. One of their most well-known efforts is the Red Kettle Campaign, where volunteers ring bells and collect donations at local businesses to raise funds that stay in the community. 

You can help by volunteering to ring the bell during the Red Kettle season, donating, or supporting programs like the Hope Market, which provides food and essentials items to those in need.
