Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA)

Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Notice

The Yakima County Department of Corrections (YCDOC) is committed to a zero-tolerance policy for sexual abuse and sexual harassment. Every report will be taken seriously, investigated, and addressed in accordance with law.

Reports of sexual abuse, sexual harassment, or staff misconduct can be made twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Inmates may report directly to correctional staff, medical or mental health providers, chaplains, or law enforcement officers. Reports may also be made in writing by submitting a grievance through the inmate kiosk system or by writing to YCDOC Internal Affairs.

Inmates may call 567 on the inmate phone system. This call is free, unblocked, and is not recorded or monitored. Members of the public may call (509) 574-2985, which connects directly to the Yakima County Sheriff’s Office. Both lines go directly to the Sheriff’s Office at 1822 S. First Street in Yakima. The Sheriff’s Office reviews messages during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

Every report is reviewed and investigated promptly. Sustained reports are forwarded to the proper authorities in accordance with mandatory reporting laws. Incarcerated individuals who report sexual abuse or sexual harassment will be offered follow-up medical and mental health services at no cost.

Reports may be made anonymously, but enough information must be provided for an investigation to begin. The reporting line is available to victims, witnesses, and members of the community. You do not need to be the victim to make a report.

To make a report now, inmates may dial 567 from the inmate phone system, and members of the public may call (509) 574-2985.
