Civil Protection Orders

Types of Protection Orders

There are different types of protection orders that apply to different people and different scenarios. The primary purpose of most court orders is to keep the “respondent” or “defendant” from contacting or harming the “petitioner” or “victim/witness.” Violation of these orders could result in criminal prosecution. If you or someone you know is feeling threatened, it’s important to understand which protection order may be right for you.

Civil orders are orders you request. Criminal orders are requested by WA State (through a prosecutor) in a criminal case.

For information on how to file in person or electronically, please visit our clerk's page.

To file a Protection Order

1. Go to the clerk’s office (on the 3rd floor of the main courthouse)  to get the Petition for a Protection order and the other necessary documents to file for a Protection Order.  Online, these documents are here: Washington State Courts - Court Forms - Protection Orders.  If you are filing online, please contact the clerk’s office about this process (509) 574-1430 or visit the clerk's page.

2. After you fill out all the documents, file them with the clerk’s office, either in person or by email.

3. If you are asking for a temporary protection order, in person,  the clerk’s office will tell you which courtroom to go to so a judge can consider your request.

4. If you are asking for a temporary protection order by email, the clerks office will notify you if your request was approved by a judge.

5. You are not responsible for serving or giving the documents to the restrained party.  The clerk’s office will email your documents to the law enforcement agency to serve the restrained party.

6. A court hearing on your request for a final protection order will be scheduled, either at the main courthouse or in juvenile court.  You may appear by zoom for the hearing, but you need to make the arrangements at least three court days before the hearing, by calling (509) 574-2710. You may also bring a legal advocate or support person to attend court with you.

7. You must attend the court hearing, or your case will be dismissed. To appear remotely, you must make a request to the court at least three days before the hearing date. You can find more information about attending remotely by visiting our Remote Attendance Options page. If your case has been dismissed by mistake, you can refile your request for a protection order, just go to the clerk’s office to start the process again.

Hope Card Info Washington Hope Program

Washington's Hope Card Program offers protected persons an easier way to carry vital information about their full orders of protection.

Instead of carrying a full legal civil protection order with you at all times, you can keep the smaller, durable, and more accessible Hope Card with you. Hope Cards are available to anyone issued a protection order, including minor children, and are completely free.

The card includes all the information law enforcement needs to verify the protection order if a potential violation occurs, including the following:

  • The name of the person restrained and their identifying information
  • The names of the persons protected
  • The protection order case number and issuing court
  • The protection order's issuance and expiration dates

A Hope Card isn’t a substitute for a protection order, and you must already have a full protection order to request a Hope Card. Requesting a Hope Card on this site is not an application for a protection order.

If you already have a full (not temporary) protection order, use the information on your protection order paperwork to fill out the Hope Card request form below. You will automatically receive one Hope Card for each protected party listed on the protection order, plus an extra card. If you need additional or replacement cards, please submit a new request form.

Who should I contact with questions about the Hope Card Program? For questions about the Hope Card Program, call 360-704-4042 or use the Contact Us Form.

To request a card, click to access the Hope Card Request Form to request a Hope Card, including requests for additional or replacement Hope Cards. You must already have a civil protection order issued by the court to request a Washington Hope Card. Please refer to your protection order paperwork to complete this form. This form is not an application for a protection order.
